¿Cómo decir fechas completas en inglés?

En esta lección aprenderás a decir la fecha en inglés.

Es algo muy útil saber si se va al extranjero, por ejemplo, si necesita reservar un restaurante, un hotel o un boleto de tren, es posible que se le soliciten fechas. ¡Mejor estar preparado!

No te preocupes, no es muy complicado, pero para esta lección ya necesitarás saber los meses en inglés así como los días.

Solicitar la fecha en inglés:

Mira estos ejemplos:

• What’s today’s date ? / What’s the date today ? (= que es la fecha de hoy).
• It’s May 5. / It’s the 5th of May. (= es el 5 de mayo)

• What day is it today ? / What day is it ? / What’s today ? (= a qué día estamos ?)
• Today’s Thursday, May 5th (May fifth). (= hoy es jueves 5 de mayo)

Presta atención a la diferencia entre ‘day‘ (día) y ‘date‘ (la fecha).

• Day: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday…
• Date: July 14th, December 2nd, January 3rd…

Nota: ¡recuerde poner una letra mayúscula todos los meses!

Por qué poner ‘th’, ‘nd’ o ‘rd’ después del número?

¡Estos son números ordinales! De hecho, para decir la fecha en inglés no es necesario usar los números normales sino los números ordinales:

Ej:  Today is the seventh of August (y no:  Today is the seven of August  )

Los ordinales también se usan para hablar de siglos:

• The 16th century => El siglo VI

Decir la fecha en inglés británico e inglés americano:

Los ingleses y los estadounidenses tienen una forma diferente de decir la fecha. En caso de duda, es mejor usar la forma británica que parece más obvia:

• Británico (día / mes / año) → the seventeeth of July
• Americano (mes / día / año) → July the seventeeth

El año:

No es necesario decir el año si se le solicita una fecha actual. Por otro lado, si habla de una fecha en el pasado o en el futuro, vale la pena decir el año. No olvides poner una coma antes:

• 15/04/2001 → The fifteenth of April two thousand and one (à l’oral) / The fifteenth of April, 2001 (al escrito).
• When were you born ? → 1st May, 1983.
• When did you arrive in New York ? → In 2011.
• When is the next World Cup ? → In July of 2017.

Hablar sobre el comienzo, la mitad y el final del mes:

Mira estos ejemplos:
