驴C贸mo usar el Pasado Simple en ingl茅s?

El pasado simple (o past simple en ingl茅s) tambi茅n se llama pret茅rito. As铆 que no hay diferencia, es lo mismo. Deber铆a ser bastante f谩cil entonces…

Es realmente un tiempo esencial para saber, as铆 que mant茅n los ojos abiertos:

1/ 驴Cu谩l es el uso del pasado simple en ingl茅s?

El Pasado Simple se utiliza para describir una acci贸n, o para contar un evento que ocurri贸 antes del momento del que estamos hablando y que a partir de ahora ha terminado.

Mire cuidadosamente, las siguientes oraciones usan el pasado simple:

  • I went to the cinema yesterday = Ayer fui al cine.
  • She saw her mother last week = Vio a su madre la semana pasada.
  • He was in Paris last year = Estuvo en Par铆s el a帽o pasado.
  • Where did you go ? = 驴Ad贸nde fuiste?
  • I didn’t like the movie = No me gust贸 la pel铆cula.
  • They worked together for two years = Trabajaron juntos durante dos a帽os.

Si quieres traducirlo al espa帽ol puedes usar el pasado simple, el pasado compuesto o el imperfecto del indicativo:

‘They waited for two hours’ puede traducirse en:

  • Esperaron durante dos horas.
  • Estaban esperando dos horas
  • Estuvieron esperando dos horas.

2/ La formaci贸n del pasado simple en ingl茅s:

  • Frase afirmativa 鈫 sujeto + base verbal + ed (o un verbo irregular)
  • Frase negativa 鈫 sujeto + didn’t + verbo en infinitivo (go, buy, work…)
  • Frase interrogativa 鈫Did + sujeto + verbo en infinitivo (go, buy, work…)
Afirmativo_ Negativo Pregunta
聽I聽/聽you聽/聽we聽/聽they 聽 聽I played 聽I didn’t (= did not) play
Did I聽play ?_
聽he聽/聽she聽/聽it聽 聽He played_ 聽He didn’t (= did not)聽play_ Did he play ?_

Ejemplos:

  • You聽played聽tennis.
  • Did聽you聽play聽tennis ?
  • You didn’t (=聽did not)聽play聽tennis.
  • She went to the supermarket. 聽
  • Did she go to聽the supermarket聽? 聽
  • She didn’t go to聽the supermarket.
  • Did you pay for your train ticket ?
  • (+)聽Yes, I paid for my train ticket. (o= Yes, I did.)
  • (-)聽No, I didn’t pay for my train ticket. (o= No, I didn’t.)

鈿狅笍 Para una oraci贸n internegativa, reemplazamos did con didn’t:

  • Didn’t聽they聽have聽enough money to buy it ?驴No ten铆an suficiente dinero para comprarlo?

鈿狅笍 En el pasado simple, los verbos regulares terminan en -ed:

  • She waited for them at the train station.
  • He finished work late last Friday.
  • They decided to go to the cinema last night.
  • They played baseball yesterday.
  • I lived in London two years ago.

鈿狅笍 聽隆Tambi茅n hay muchos verbos irregulares en el pasado simple! No terminan en -ed:

  • I went to the pub last night.
  • He saw his girlfriend a few days ago.
  • They said they聽met聽him at the club.
  • She bought this hat last week.

Tienes que aprender los verbos irregulares de memoria porque no puedes inventarlos (haz clic aqu铆 para ver la lista completa).

鈿狅笍 Ten cuidado, muchos verbos no cambian en el pasado simple (lista completa aqu铆):

  • I cuted聽鉂
  • I cut聽鉁旓笍
  • it costed聽鉂
  • it cost聽鉁旓笍
  • He leted聽鉂
  • He let聽鉁旓笍
  • She puted聽鉂
  • She put聽鉁旓笍
  • We quited聽鉂
  • We quit聽鉁旓笍

鈿狅笍聽‘read‘ tampoco cambia al pasado simple por escrito, pero se pronuncia ‘red’ oralmente (隆como el color!):

‘He read a book last week’ en un texto se pronuncia oralmente ‘He red a book…’聽

鈿狅笍 En la forma interrogativa, tambi茅n podemos usar when, why, who, what…聽

  • When did you work at the bar ? I worked at the bar last week.
  • Why did she go to the train station ? She went to the train station to say goodbye to her parents.
  • Who did they meet at the club last night ? They met Tom with his girlfriend.

鈿狅笍 ‘Do’聽tambi茅n puede ser el verbo principal de la frase:

  • What did you do last week ?
  • I didn’t do that !

3/ El verbo estar/ser (to be) al pasado simple:

Be se convierte en was聽/聽were.

Afirmativo_ Negativo Pregunta
聽I聽/聽he /聽she /聽it 聽 聽I was 聽I was not (= wasn’t) 聽was I聽?_
聽we / you /聽they聽 聽you were_ 聽you were not (= weren’t)_ 聽were you聽?_

_

  • I was tired last night.
  • Were you tired last night ?
  • He wasn’t tired last night.
  • How was the test ? It wasn’t difficult at all !

鈿狅笍 Ten cuidado, si usas was / were en una oraci贸n interrogativa o negativa, no pongas did !

  • Did you were sick聽last night ?聽鉂
  • Were you sick聽last night ?聽鉁旓笍

4/ El verbo tener (to have) en el pasado simple:

Have se convierte en Had para todas las personas:

Afirmativo_ Negativo Pregunta
聽I / you / he / she / it / we / you / they 聽 聽I had 聽I didn’t have_ 聽Did I have聽?_

  • He聽had聽a new car for his birthday.
  • They聽had聽plenty of time to do it.
  • They聽didn’t have聽enough time to go there.
  • Did聽you聽have聽enough money?
  • How many beer did you have ?

鈿狅笍 En la forma negativa e interrogativa, hay que utilizar have (y no had o聽has)

  • He didn’t had his keys聽鉂
  • He聽didn’t have聽his keys聽鉁旓笍
  • Did聽she聽has a baby ?聽鉂
  • Did she have a baby ?聽鉁旓笍

5/ A saber:

鈿狅笍 隆En las preguntas y frases negativas, tenga cuidado de poner el infinitivo despu茅s de did / didn’t!

  • I didn’t eat it聽鉁旓笍
  • I didn’t ate it聽鉂
  • I didn’t do it聽鉁旓笍
  • I didn’t did it聽鉂
  • I didn’t push him聽鉁旓笍
  • I didn’t pushed him聽鉂
  • He didn’t steal your money聽鉁旓笍
  • He didn’t stole your money聽鉂
  • Did you see her ?聽鉁旓笍
  • Did you saw her ?聽鉂
  • Did she go there ?聽鉁旓笍
  • Did she went there ?聽鉂

鈿狅笍 En muchos ejemplos de esta lecci贸n habr谩s notado que hay una indicaci贸n de tiempo (fecha o duraci贸n):

before / last week end / last night / last friday / yesterday / before yesterday / a few days ago / two years ago / three month ago / for one year / for four months …

No tiene que ser obligatorio:

  • I enjoyed the show.
  • He prefered that movie.
  • She waited at the bus stop.
  • We loved it !

鈿狅笍 Podemos usar el pasado simple para hablar de h谩bitos, gustos o rutinas en el pasado:

  • When I was a kid, I loved pizzas.
  • He smoked cigarettes when he was young.
  • I ran every day when I was in High School.
